With 2025 marking the ten-year anniversary of Obergefell v. Hodges, Mercer Law Review’s 2025 Symposium will focus on the legacy and lessons of the Freedom-to-Marry Movement. Our goal is to provide engaging presentations and to generate candid conversations that will enable legal professionals to reflect on the legacy of the Freedom-to-Marry Movement and its implications on future legal developments.

Dinner and Keynote Address

  • Jon Davidson, a 40-year veteran of the LGBTQ-rights movement, will be our keynote speaker. Mr. Davidson will be introduced by Professor Scott C. Titshaw.
  • This is an invitation-only event

Panels

Our Friday Symposium will feature a mix of legal scholars, practitioners, and activists; who will participate in three panels. The first panel will be moderated by Professor Bonnie Carlson and will discuss the family law legacy of the Freedom-to-Marry Movement. The second panel, moderated by Professor Gary Simson, will examine the constitutional law legacy of the Obergefell decision. The third panel, moderated by Professor Scott C. Titshaw, will explore the shared lessons that can be learned between civil rights movements.

CLE

  • The Georgia Bar approved the symposium for four (4) general CLE credits.
